Stepping Into Another World: A Volunteer’s Reflections

A university student named Muna arrived at Dhammajarinee Witthaya School not knowing what to expect.
What she found changed her.
In her own words: "Coming to Dhammajarinee Witthaya School felt like stepping into another world, one more alive and vibrant than anything I’ve ever known.
The air here carries a certain fullness; the buzzing of nature, the hum of so many young lives moving together with purpose. In those first days, I felt small, at times overwhelmed by the grandness of it all, and a bit out of place as seemingly the only foreigner within miles.
One afternoon, I sat quietly beside the water fountain, taking it all in, when two girls, around 13 years old, approached me. One of them spoke English almost fluently, and with the sweetest curiosity, she wanted to know everything about me. They took me by the hand, led me through the campus, and introduced me to their friends and teachers.
That simple act of kindness became a doorway. From that moment on, I wasn’t just an outsider looking in, I was being invited into their home. This kindness continued throughout my stay, with teachers, students, and administration alike checking in on me, including me on trips to the market, teaching me their games, and gifting yummy sweets. This level of care and appreciation is what really made me feel at home.
The daily rhythms and routine have a nourishing sense of order. The meals are warm, nourishing Thai food every day. The nights — echoing with laughter, activities, the playfulness of youth.
And with every bow the girls offered me, my heart softened a little more. Each one a reminder that I had been given not just respect, but also a sense of responsibility toward them.
In the classroom, I see their brilliance every day. They are eager, intelligent, endlessly creative. We laugh together through the language barrier, but connection doesn’t really need words. It flows through smiles, gestures, and shared knowledge.
What amazes me most is how much of the school is carried by the students themselves. Every corner is cleaned and cared for by their own hands. Order and beauty arise not from control, but from discipline, dignity, and reverence.
And twice each day, all students and teachers meditate together. This practice weaves coherence and calm through the campus, leaving a glow that you can actually feel in the air.
Dhammajarinee Witthaya is more than a school. It is a sanctuary of innocence and strength. A place where girls are allowed to remain young and curious, while also being prepared to walk into the world as strong, self-sufficient women — women of honor, compassion, and grace.
What I’ve witnessed here is an example of what education can be at its best: not just preparing students for success, but teaching them the highest qualities of being human.
And for me… what began as summer teaching experience has become something profound. This place has become a home. These girls have become family. And this experience will live in my heart forever."
Muna’s experience reflects the heart of Dhammajarinee Witthaya School: a community where girls are given the care, education, and support they need to grow into capable, confident, and compassionate women. We are deeply grateful for the support of our community, whose generosity makes it possible for us to nurture and empower girls every day.
