From an early age, students at DWS are given meaningful opportunities to take responsibility, support others, and contribute to the life of the school. Beginning in Grade 1, each class selects a class president who helps coordinate with teachers, supports classmates, and develops the confidence to lead. As students grow older, leadership opportunities expand through assemblies, student-led activities, peer mentoring, leading volunteering in the community, and participation in the Student Council.

These opportunities are designed to ensure every student has the chance to discover her voice—and help others discover theirs.

One of the most important leadership structures at DWS is the Student Council. More than an extracurricular activity, it gives students a genuine role in school decision-making. Council members help plan and implement school projects, represent the perspectives of their peers, and work alongside teachers and administrators to strengthen the school community.

For Fahsai, serving on the Student Council became one of the defining experiences of her time at DWS.

"One of the most special experiences I have had during my time at the school was being selected as the Vice President of the Student Council," she shared. "I had to listen to the opinions of my classmates, coordinate with teachers, and help organize school activities so they ran smoothly.”

The experience gave her a new understanding of leadership.

"These responsibilities taught me that good leadership isn’t about giving orders—it’s about serving others, supporting the team, and setting a good example.”

Her experience captures what makes leadership development at DWS unique. Students are not simply encouraged to lead; they are trusted with real responsibilities. They learn how to listen, work through challenges, represent others, and contribute to a community larger than themselves.

For many girls who arrive at DWS having faced significant challenges, these opportunities become a source of confidence. Through leadership, they discover strengths they did not know they possessed and begin to see themselves differently.

Long before graduation, they are already learning how to make a difference—in their classrooms, in their school community, and eventually in the wider world.
