More About Dhammajarinee Witthaya School
Dhammajarinee Witthaya School (DWS) is the first and only free Buddhist boarding school for girls in Thailand. Orphaned or disadvantaged Thai boys have always had the option to study at Buddhist monasteries, but Thai girls have not. Poverty and lack of education have often led disadvantaged Thai girls to be lured into dangerous and degrading occupations.
DWS began quite naturally, with a small group of nuns helping local villagers, and was granted legal status in 1993.. Now, thanks to their generous donors, DWS is able to provide room, board, and education, free of charge, to girls who have no other opportunity for quality education. Without this opportunity, the problems of poverty, neglect, and abuse would only continue when these girls grow up and have children of their own. But DWS breaks this cycle and opens the door to a brighter future for these girls, their families, and their communities.
In addition to instruction in mathematics, social studies, English, etc., the students' daily routine also includes meditation and prayer, and they receive instruction in occupational skills such as organic gardening, food service, accounting and more.
In spite of their disadvantaged and often troubled backgrounds, DWS students consistently win awards in such varied areas as science, traditional chanting and even Photoshop! Former DWS students have gone on to study at university and to open small businesses.
The school's reputation has spread, with the result that more and more girls want to attend. In order to accomodate more students, DWS has been steadily expanding their facilities. Your contribution today helps provide a better tomorrow for many young girls in Thailand.
