Peaceful Slumber

Not long ago I heard a very touching story about the wonderful care the girls receive at Dhammajarinee Witthaya School. Although some of the girls are sent to the school by loving families who simply want their children to have more opportunity than they can provide for them at home, that is not always the case. Sometimes it happens that a young child has been orphaned or otherwise traumatized, and now she faces the additional difficulty of adapting to a totally new situation where she does not know anyone. In those cases an individual nun is assigned to her care and she watches over her day and night, even sleeping with the child, until she has adjusted to living at the school.

Two MInutes of Pure Gratitude

Gratitude is a word that is thrown around a lot these days, and sometime it can seem a bit over-used. But real and heartfelt gratitude is something else again. Recently one of the Advocates for Girls team members was able to speak in person with some of the girls at Dhammajarinee Witthaya School and there she witnessed true gratitude, the kind that moves both those expressing it and those hearing it, to tears. The audio on this clip is a little rough, you may have to turn it up a bit, but I promise you, it's worth it.

Amazing Building Progress

Here's a great shot of the new building-in-progress at Dhammajarinee Witthaya School. When complete, it will enable the nuns to DOUBLE the number of girls they help!

Impressive, isn't it?
But this building would not be happening if it weren't for the dedication of Aunampai and the other nuns who were there from the beginning, some 23 years ago. In those days the nuns handled a lot of the construction work themselves--here you can see a great shot of them climbing a partially finished structure. These were women of action who recognized the value of educating girls, long before organizations like the United Nations, the Clinton Foundation, or CNN were touting the many ways that educating girls benefits communities, countries and human society as a whole. And although the buildings are now contractor built, the dedication of the nuns continues to be the heart and soul of Dhammajarinee Witthaya School.
